À Rome, le jour férié du Ferragosto (quinze août), la ville est déserte. Bruno Cortona (Vittorio Gassman), la quarantaine vigoureuse, amateur de conduite sportive et de jolies femmes, déambule en voiture, une Lancia Aurelia B24, à la recherche d’un paquet de cigarettes et d’un téléphone public. Roberto Mariani (Jean-Louis Trintignant), un étudiant en droit resté en ville pour préparer des examens, l’accueille chez lui. Sous l’impulsion de l’exubérance et du sans-gêne de Cortona, ils entreprennent un voyage en voiture qui les emmènera vers des destinations toujours plus lointaines. Le jeune étudiant va découvrir l’écart entre la réalité et ce qu’il imaginait concernant l’amour et les rapports sociaux.

On the Ferragosto holiday (August 15) in Rome, the city is deserted. Bruno Cortona (Vittorio Gassman), a lover of sporty driving and pretty women, wanders around in a car, a Lancia Aurelia B24, looking for a pack of cigarettes and a public telephone. Roberto Mariani (Jean-Louis Trintignant), a law student who stayed in town to prepare for exams, welcomes him into his home. Spurred on by Cortona's exuberance and ease, they embark on a car journey that will take them to ever more distant destinations. The young student will discover the gap between reality and what he imagined concerning love and social relationships.

L’histoire de ce film de Dino Risi, tourné en noir et blanc en Italie en 1962, est totalement inintéressante. Pendant la plus grande partie du film, Vittorio Gassman fonce à toute allure dans sa Lancia décapotable en klaxonnant presque continuellement (c’est exaspérant, un klaxon italien à cinq tons !) et en draguant toutes les automobilistes qu’il croise, le tout avec un Trintignant vert de peur accroché au tableau de bord.

Mais à la 18ème minute, l'Alouette II F-WIFB (No. 1069) vient survoler la voiture des deux acteurs principaux, elle est censée être de la gendarmerie italienne en mission de surveillance des infractions routières. On ne la voit que quelques secondes, orbitant au-dessus du véhicule qui fonce à vive allure.

The story of this film shot in black and white in Italy in 1962 by Dino Risi is totally uninteresting. For most of the film, Vittorio Gassman speeds along in his convertible Lancia, honking his horn almost continuously (it's infuriating, a five-tone Italian horn!) and flirting with every motorist he passes, all with a green Trintignant of fear hanging on the dashboard.

But in the 18th minute, the Alouette II F-WIFB (MSN 1069) flies over the car of the two main actors; it is supposed to be from the Italian gendarmerie on a mission to monitor traffic violations. We only see her for a few seconds, orbiting above the speeding vehicle.
